Luxury Holidays In India

Rajasthan usually is one of the most visited states while on luxury holidays in India. I had an unforgettable experience at Udaipur. I had stayed in the city on my previous visits and hence I decided to spend a few days at Devigarh, a beautiful fort converted into a luxury hotel.  Set in the sleepy village of Delwara, a short 45 minute drive from the Udaipur airport, its majestic and imposing. The palace fortress has been transformed into a beautiful hotel with airy suites.  The palace oozes with character yet has rooms that have white terrazzo floors with contemporary accents.  As most old buildings there are several levels of accommodation but don’t be disheartened if you have walking disabilities as there are suites on the ground floor that open out to beautifully landscaped gardens. If you are after the views, don’t forget to book yourself into their Aravali Suite which as the name suggests offers stunning views of the Aravali Hills.

Luxury holidays in India are incomplete without a fine dining experience and there couldn’t be a better place than Devi Garh. Questions like “where would you care to dine?” aren’t uncommon at the palace and for the ones that are looking for healthy eating a low calorie Spa menu is also available.  The main restaurant offers magnificent view of the Aravali along with innovative Asian and continental cuisine served in traditional Indian metal bowls. Fruits and vegetables are organically grown and picked fresh from orchards.  If you are celebrating your birthday or anniversary a romantic candle lit dinner can be set up in the private meditation room once used by the princess overlooking the courtyard. If you want something even more special the Sheesh Mahal is the most magical venue. Traces of History in the form of faded frescoes, mirror work and broken Chinese ceramic decoration lend charm to it. Traditional low Indian seating and rows of candles transform this into a perfect venue for a very special occasion.

Apart from enjoying the comforts offered by the palace, there are a bunch of short exploratory trips that one can make from Devigarh. The intricate stone carvings at Nagda or the sandstone and marble temples of Eklingji are just 5-6 kms away. I thoroughly enjoyed Devigarh as it was away from the hustle and bustle yet was a conveniently located just 40 minutes from the romantic city of Udaipur famous for its City Palace, lakes and gardens.

Bengal Tiger Safari

Located in South Eastern Rajasthan, Ranthambore is one of the most romantic reserves famous for its tigers. One of the best locations in India to see the majestic predators in their natural habitat, it likes just 130 kms from the pink city of Jaipur and therefore fits in very well with a holiday to North India.   The park was once the hunting grounds of the Maharaja of Jaipur and is extremely picturesque with cenotaphs and old fortifications dotted around. The landscape is of rugged terrain and valleys containing lakes and rivers.  Travelers on a Bengal tiger safari  find it very easy to include a stay at one of the rustic lodges at Ranthambore due to its proximity to Agra and Jaipur.   Certainly, a visit to Ranthambore National Park is a treat for every nature lover.  It’s worth spending time watching tigers roaming around, the outstanding scenery and the species of chirpy birds .The forest is the typically dry deciduous type, with Dhok, being the most obvious tree found throughout the region.

The best time to visit the park is March and April.  As it’s easily accessible the park can get crowded and therefore the authorities offer two options. You can either go in a canter or opt for a jeep safari. While on a Bengal tiger safari one can also visit Malik Talao, the Ranthambore Fort, Rajbagh Talao, and Padam Talao that are some of the prominent landmarks in Ranthambore. Ranthambore is also rich in bird life with around 300 species of birds; including vultures, serpent eagles, cormorant, painted spur fowl, sarus crane, bronzed winged jacana, sandpiper, kingfisher, nightjar, and many other migrants who come from the north of Himalayas.

Taj Resort Tiger Safaris in India

Wildlife tourism in India has become extremely popular mainly in the state of Madhya Pradesh.  Several lodges have sprung up in the last few years but few have been set up by Taj hotels in collaboration with leading eco-tourism company &BEYOND based on their approach to conservation, which cares for the land, people and wildlife.

Mahua Kothi in Bandhavgarh National Park is the first of their four Taj resort tiger safaris in India. The lodge comprises of beautifully decorated accommodations using local materials built in Central-Indian style, with minimal interference in the natural habitat, so there is an immediate sense of place.  The main lounge has a generous verandah and a rooftop for outdoor meals and subtle colours have been used to gel with the forest beyond.

Several minor details have been taken into consideration to offer an unforgettable experience. Unlike parks in other parts of India, the safaris vehicles at Bandhavgarh are provided by the lodges themselves. To offer unrestricted view to each guest, the vehicles have been custom designed and are very spacious.  At Taj resort tiger safaris in India, guests usually get two safaris each day, the morning one beginning at 6:30 and the afternoon drive starting at 3 pm. Though Bandhavgarh gets a lot of bad publicity due to the number of tourists visiting the park, it still offers superb wildlife viewing chances. Though many won’t agree, the park authorities have tried their best to cater to the ever increasing tourist traffic by introducing a route system which means you are given a specific route when you enter the park and it’s the trackers responsibility that such rules are obeyed.

I was fortunate to experience the Taj resort tiger safaris in India hospitality and I must confess that it was a fantastic experience. Right from the time I checked in to assigning a naturalist for my safaris to resort facilities, it was just super.  Their naturalists have to complete a 6 months training program by CC Africa and only the few who that show real passion and enthusiasm are finally selected to work as naturalists in these exclusive lodges. They not only talk about the wildlife spotted during your safari but share some hidden secrets that make it a whole new experience. They are all rounders! One morning we followed the call of the dominant male tiger as he padded through the undergrowth. He was well camouflaged due to his orange and black markings in the stripes made by the thin trunks of bamboo and the spaces between them. I saw four tigers in all, lots of spotted deer, sambar and plenty of deer. Failing that, there is always the food. Mahua Kothi’s kitchen serves some of the most fresh, nourishing and delicious food.  The ingredients are grown on site, and there are so many places to enjoy them too.  It could on the rooftop, in the garden, beneath the Mahua tree, up at the temple or in your private courtyard.

Travellers usually have a lot on their plate when they visit India and it can be quite hectic. Mahua Kothi can indulge you in-room Ayurvedic massages to cooling off in their swimming pool.  The elegant accommodation, stunning safaris and authentic cuisine make for an unforgettable experience while at a Taj resort tiger safaris in India.

Luxury Holidays to Nepal

Luxury holidays to Nepal are an opportunity to enjoy the multihued attractions of this fascinating and enigmatic country from the comfort of some of the most inspired hotels in the subcontinent – and given the superb standards being set by Indian hotels and heritage properties at the moment – that is indeed saying something. Kathmandu is naturally well supplied with excellent hotels including iconic ones like the Yak & Yeti built around the historic Rana palace called Lal Durbar and home to the famous Copper Chimney Restaurant – first established by Boris Lissanovich the legendary founder of tourism in Nepal. But for sheer inspired luxury, nothing can compare with the Dwarika’s hotel which seamlessly combines the most extraordinary original examples of Newar art and architecture with new construction. It is an architectural tour de force – but more than matched by the beauty of the interiors, comfort, service and the wonderful food. In fact a traditional 6 or 9 course dinner at their signature Newari restaurant – Krishna arpan – is an event in itself.

High on the south-eastern rim of the Kathmandu Valley, on the ancient trade route to Tibet is the historic market town of Dhulikhel. Away from the pollution and crowds of Kathmandu proper, this medieval city is something of a hidden gem. The old town centre is richly embellished with numerous examples of Newari architecture testifying to the wealth generated by the Indo-Tibetan trade that the merchants of these Newar cities controlled. Dhulikhel has always been a favourite destination for us, because here – above the haze of Kathmandu, you look out over a magnificent panorama of the Himalayas second only to nearby Nagarkot and here the Dwarika group has opened its second superb luxury hotel – Dwarika’s Shangrila. Nepal is a walker’s paradise and for those who enjoy day walks through gentle country-side dominated by grand scenery and lovely villages with warm and friendly people and Dwarika’s Dhulikhel is the perfect base.

Further West of Kathmandu is the second major city of Nepal Pokhara – located around the lovely Phewa Lake and with the fantastic triangular shape of Maccha Puchhare or Fishtail, rearing 20,000 feet straight up and dominating the Pokhara skyline. A 1000 feet above Pokhara town is the Pokhara Mountain Lodge away from the hustle and bustle of town, set in idyllic mountain country on a ridge with the most incredible views of Fishtail and the entire Annapurna massif. The Pokhara Lodge is luxurious – in its setting, its views, its beautiful architecture inspired by the local styles and built with local materials by local craftsmen; it’s spacious beautiful rooms and above all its dining area, bar, lounge, expansive fire-place and best of all the amazing terrace where you can spend days just watching the play of sunlight and shadow over the hills and mountains in front of you.

But luxury is also about experience and for that you would be hard put to match the Tiger Tops Tented Camp, with its lovely en suite tents set on a bluff in the middle of the Chitwan National Park, overlooking the flood plain and riveraine forest of the Reu River with rhinos grazing below your tent and alarm calls of spooked deer ringing through the night all around you as tigers patrol their territory. For those bent on ensuring comfort – luxury holidays in Nepal are worth every penny you spend.

Holidays in Nepal

Holidays in Nepal are about incredible scenery, the most magnificent mountain panoramas in the world, astonishingly rich wildlife that combines elements from several zoo-geographic regions and a complex and fascinating culture that combines the world of High Asia with that of the Indian subcontinent producing a particularly attractive synthesis. This is where Tibetan Buddhism meets Hinduism and produces a peculiarly Nepali fusion and in the faces of the people you see the entire spectrum of Asian humanity represented. Head out into the mountains and you will be greeted by the friendliest, warmest, most straight-forward people on Earth. The middle hills of the Himalayas are the home of the legendary Gurkhas, considered by many to be finest infantrymen in the world.

With high mountains, fast and beautiful rivers, lush lowland tropical forests, holidays in Nepal are a wonderful family break offering something for everyone. It is hard to beat an itinerary that can include a flight around Everest, a raft trip that combines scenic float sections with exciting white-water, walking from a superbly situated hotel and riding an elephant in lush tropical lowland jungles looking for rhinos and tigers. But it isn’t all mountains and nature. In the Kathmandu valley you will find some of the most extraordinary art, architecture and sculpture and craftsmanship of remarkable sophistication. Some of my best memories are of whiling away an afternoon in the wonderful Nyatapola restaurant in the astonishing medieval city of Bhaktapur, with the tall and massive Nyatapola Temple dominating the entire city and just watching the most marvellously interesting and varied procession of people and scenes – women in red-bordered saris bringing produce to market, an ancient parrot green Mercedes profusely strewn with flowers carrying a bride-groom to his wedding followed by a joyful group of friends and relatives well lubricated with the potent distilled liquors that are the pride of every Nepali household.

Vacations to India and Nepal

Vacations to India and Nepal can open such a tempting array of possibilities. One of the best developments of recent years has been the growth of small regional airlines in both countries that now connect smaller cities and town across the border  – so you are no longer limited to just flying from major Indian cities to Kathmandu but can also fly from Bagdogra in India to Bharatpur in Eastern Nepal. This allows you to have an adventure in the Sola-Khumbu area, maybe spend a few days in the terai at the wonderful Kosi River Camp and then fly to Bagdogra and spend a few days exploring the Darjeeling and Sikkim Hills, staying in such wonderful places as Samthar Farm and Glenburn. I still vividly remember one trip which I privately labelled ‘Miracle Sunrises’.

Vacations to India and Nepal with IndianExplorations.com

We watched sunrise on the Taj Mahal and it was one of those perfect mornings with just enough mist in the atmosphere to enrich the dawn light and paint the marble dome in deep pink. I then travelled to Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve in Central India and on our first drive in, just as the Sun was breaking over the rim of the eastern hills, we came across the resident male tiger and followed him for a magical mile or two. Then to Varanasi and dawn on the Ganges when you really understand why this city is Kashi – The Illumined. Finally we arrived in Nepal and one pre-dawn hour saw us at Nagarkot sipping hot tea and then the Sun rose under a clear cold sky and caught the tip of Everest, (not easy to find) and suddenly the entire towering white gigantic spread of the Central Himalayas stood clear across the horizon. We continued down to one of the ancient and best preserved of Nepal’s classical cities – Bhaktapur. Nothing is more evocative of the old Nepal than this beautifully preserved gem. Everywhere you look is something special and as you wander down narrow cobbled lanes, listening to the barking Dog Bell and pausing to admire the potters of Taumadhi. You understand something of Nepal.

This is what vacations to India and Nepal offer – a wealth of magical and evocative diversity.

Holidays to Nepal

Holidays to Nepal allow you to experience one of the  most diverse landscapes on Earth, opening up an extraordinary range of experiences. Imagine riding an elephant through lush tropical grassland 450 feet above sea-level following an enormous Indian one-horned rhinoceros framed against the back-drop of some of the highest peaks of the Himalayas – 26,000 feet high giants like Makalu and Annapurna. It is the most extraordinary experience and underlines dramatically the fact that within it’s 90 mile width, Nepal encompasses virtually all the habitats that you could encounter between the tropics and the poles compressed into narrow altitudinal bands.

Harbouring the highest mountains in the world Nepal offers some of the finest mountain walking in the world. This is the country that invented expedition-style fully supported treks that allow you the relative luxury of heading off the inhabited trails into remote country with your own self-contained team carrying all the food and equipment that you may need. All these treks are accompanied and most often lead by Sherpas, the legendary mountain-men of Tibetan origin who live in the high cold regions at the base of Everest.

The Sherpas are one colourful strand in the complex ethnic tapestry of Nepal – which adds enormously to the country’s fascination. Nepal is a veritable melting pot of peoples – Indo-Tibetan, Tibeto-Burman, Indian of various groups and all sorts of gradations and mixtures in between. And of course this is where Hinduism, the animistic Bon and Buddhism meet and combine to form almost a unique Nepali synthesis, reflected in the incredibly evolved and rich architecture and culture on display in the magnificent cities of the Kathmandu Valley. Holidays to Nepal open a door to a magnificent world of varied nature and even more varied culture.

Relaxing Himalaya Holiday

Without a doubt the Glenburn Tea Estate would be high up on the list of places that one could consider while planning a  relaxing himalaya holiday.  The journey is quite scenic as you follow the River Teesta before you cross the river to Sikkim. You begin the climb up towards Darjeeling, and then drive down into the Glenburn valley to arrive at this gorgeous bungalow that dates back to 1859. The Burra Bungalow as it’s called offers hospitality that’s second to none, with its sweeping Verandah, cozy Living Room and grand Dining Room where often candle-lit sit-down dinners are held. The rooms are tastefully decorated with different themes some with a fire place and are spacious and cozy. The fruits, vegetables, herbs and salads are from the own garden and meals are prepared with a lot of attention and as per the preference of each guest. As per the Prakashes their specialty is Tea-Leaf Pakoras, Chocolate Brownies and Tibetan Momos.

Luxury Kerala Holidays

After exploring Fort Cochin, the hills of Munnar and the spice plantations of Thekkady, luxury Kerala holidays are incomplete without a stay along the blue-green backwaters of Kerala.

Luxury Kerala Holidays with IndianExplorations.com

One that I would always recommend to my guests on luxury Kerala holidays is the Kumarakom Lake Resort.  As you as you enter the resort a well dressed staff greets you with a smile and escorts you to your private villa. The villas are dotted around carefully tended network of canals lined with palm trees. The property has around 50 villas and does give you a ‘resortie’ feel but the attention to detail in second to none and the management make sure that you have a memorable time. For guests who like to be sociable than be in a very quiet place, I think is by far the best property by the backwaters.

Luxury Kerala Holidays with IndianExplorations.com

Spread among 10 acres of palm-lined canals the red-tiled cottages have been assembled using all local materials or from reclaimed old homes.  At KLR as its popularly known, you are spoilt for choice. You can choose between a standard Heritage Villa, which overlooks the lotus canals, or a larger Heritage Lake View Villa or Presidential Suite, with views of the lake. All have their own pools, an area of lawn and a private courtyard. The resort also boasts excellent ethnic Kerala dishes and a traditional tea shop, perfect to stop by after a day’s exploration of the backwaters.  Guests also love the Ayurveda Spa where they can experience a total mind and body overhaul with body treatments, yoga and meditation. The large pool at the Resort presents the illusion of being a part of the shimmering lake. In the freshness of the mornings or the cool evenings, the poolside is surely a welcoming sight while on luxury Kerala holidays. Apart from the usual activities that you would expect at a backwater resort, KLR also offers experiences like learning pottery using traditional techniques and weaving. You can be rest assured to enjoy every minute  at KLR.

India Tiger Safari

I recently visit Madhya Pradesh, the tiger state of India and spent few days at the beautiful Kanha National Park on an India tiger safari. I chose to stay near the Kisli Gate as it offers easy access to both Kisli Zone and the newly opened Sarhi Zone. I stayed at a small rustic lodge called Flame of the Forest set up by Karan & Isa. With just four cottages, they are able to make sure that all their guests get personal attention and a superb wildlife experience.

India Tiger Safari with IndianExplorations.com

Though Kisli Zone and the Kanha meadows are famous for its wildlife, I decided to explore the newly opened Sarhi Zone. Sarhi being a fairly new area of the park isn’t frequently visited by tourists which certainly worked in my favour while on my India tiger safari. Having been to Kisli & Mukki Zone’s, I would certainly say that its one of the most beautiful areas of the park with a mix of bamboo and dry deciduous vegetation. The slight hilly terrain adds to the enjoyment while on a safari. Though it was cold during in the early hours of the morning, the days were quite warm and therefore from a distance you could see a beautiful carpet of dried leaves laid down to welcome everyone. It’s a photographers dream.

India Tiger Safari with IndianExplorations.com

During my recent India tiger safari I saw plenty of birdlife, sambhar, cheetal and a barking deer. Kanha is one of the only reserves where one can see the barasingha’s or the twelve horned antelopes. They are seen in packs usually at mid morning. We also were fortunate to see couple of Nilgai’s (blue bull).  The icing on the cake was when we saw the Bengal tiger.  We were just passing a nala (a stream) when our attentive tracker Nainsingh noticed some movement. All our eyes and ears zeroed on to the place where he was pointing to and there he was.  Seeing our jeep halt, he stood up trying to gauge the situation. Karan who is well experienced with such situations, suggested we should leave sufficient space for him to feel comfortable to continue on his trail. As soon as we moved the jeep, he started walking towards us through the dense vegetation. We couldn’t believe it! It was the best tiger sighting ever. He walked towards our jeep and his body language was constantly implying that he was the king of the jungle.  After making sure of what our intentions were, he turned his back and crossed the road and before we knew he was well camouflaged in the dense vegetation of Sarhi. Wow what a superb end to my India tiger safari!
