India, an overall guide
“So far as I am able to judge, nothing has been left undone, either by man or nature, to make India the most extraordinary country that the sun visits on his rounds. Nothing seems to have been forgotten, nothing overlooked.” Mark Twain

For once the advertisements do not lie. India is indeed Incredible. There is something here for everyone – families on a relaxed holiday or rugged individuals disappearing over a hilly horizon bent on something exhausting. Eighty percent of the subcontinent is covered by this vast and varied land that offers such a wealth of diverse experiences – from the mind-numbing chaos of rush hour in Delhi to the aching stillness of a Himalayan dawn; from the haunting echo of a temple bell calling upon God to heed his worshipper to one of Nature’s most sublime creations – striped, silent and deadly in the dappled shade of the jungle. The swirling colours of a tribal market to the sere, austere beauty of the Desert. There is choice in everything and little secret corners and delicious surprises that make a holiday come alive with the thrill of an unexpected encounter. A lunch stop with a charming family somewhere or sundowners atop a tiny fortress in the middle of nowhere; this is what we try to do at Indian Explorations, to reveal the old traditional India – quirky and colourful and still alive in the 21st century if only you know where to look.
There are many ways to see India, in luxury or simple comfort; to cover great distances or to settle for a more relaxed and detailed exploration of a single region. There is matchless wildlife, art, history, architecture, scenery and luxurious relaxation. You can try a bit of each if you wish – perhaps mix a palatial heritage hotel in Rajasthan with a tiny, beautifully restored tea bungalow in the Darjeeling Hills; or a houseboat in the Kerala backwaters with a three-day elephant safari in the jungles of Kumaon. Once you have browsed through the short descriptions of the various regions, holiday ideas and sample itineraries, do get in touch and we will be delighted to discuss the various possibilities and create a tailor-made holiday to India just for you.
