Luxury Holiday Darjeeling Train

I recently had clients who returned from a luxury holiday in Darjeeling by train and they had the most of amazing time. They spent a few days at Kolkata one of the most “under-rated” and “under-visited” cities in India. We inclued one of the Glenburn experiences at Kolkata that left them marveling at the hidden treasures and unique history the city has to offer.

As they were travelling with their children, they were looking forward to the toy train journey to Darjeeling and it did offer them a fantastic experience. The “Toy Train” was the first to be built of its kind, and is still considered by UNESCO to be ‘the most outstanding example of a hill passenger railway’ in the world. Having said we at Indian Explorations do explore these journey’s ourselves before suggesting them to our clients. It’s a pretty tiring eight hour journey from New Jalpaiguri to Darjeeling and therefore we usually recommend the half day “Joy Ride”, a comfortable return journey from Darjeeling to Ghum.  We always recommend that such trips should be booked at least six months in advance to make it easier for us to book seats in the first class carriage for our clients. You will be treated to enormous windows giving close up views of the mountain on one side and the valley on the other. The journey includes few stops mainly at Batasia Loop from where you might be stunned by the view of Kanchenjunga. For a hundred years these little trains have climbed through the clouds into the wonderful world of Indian hill railways thus making luxury holiday Darjeeling train holidays even more enjoyable for thousands or travellers.

Imagine getting a royal welcome in the capital New Delhi with red carpet laid down just for you. Boarding such a luxury train is an experience in itself.  It’s the only way to visit so much in a short time. You feel safe but you see a lot. It’s hassle-free and much more relaxing than trying to fly from place to place.  Imagine experiencing Rajasthan, the majestic expance once where the royal rajputs lived in grand style, arriving at India’s holy land Varanasi where it promises boat rides on the Ganges, a drive through the Bandhavgarh tiger reserve, and an examination of erotic sculptures at Khajuraho before an evening at that ultimate monument of love, the Taj Mahal.

These trains have a spa car complete with steam room and gym, two sumptuous dining carriages, library, bar, sleeping carriages with ensuite cabins, a seating area with televisions, and plenty of staff to attend to your every need. Despite the creature comforts, plenty of time is spent out and about, immersed in the colourful chaos of India. There are interesting talks on the places you visit, yet gazing out of the window at the ever-changing scenery remains everyones favourite pastime. Imagine seeing snapshots – women walking with huge bundles of grass on their heads; buffaloes wallowing in muddy pools; swathes of orange and white cotton laid out in fields to dry and the sun setting over the sacred River.

Similar luxury train travel in India is possible in the South as well. The Golden Chariot weaves across Karnataka, once home to the Vijaynagar Kings who ruled in south India. The journey includes stops at Kabini wildlife sanctuary before arriving at the incredible world heritage sites of Hampi and Badami, strewn for miles with boulders, rock-cut sandstone caves and palace and temple ruins. Sit by your cabin window the evening before arriving in Goa and watch the sun stream through the forests before setting on the hills.

Menus on the train reflect the region you are travelling through – spicy lamb raarha gosht and vegetable gawafali with mooli in Rajasthan; bhuna gosht, a Lucknowi speciality, in Uttar Pradesh. It’s all delicious. Indian wine is surprisingly palatable too, and there’s always a European choice.

This new luxury train travel in India will indeed allow visitors to cross the sub-continent in comfort.

Indian Luxury Train Travel

It was only when the band turned up that I realised this wasn’t going to be an ordinary train journey but I was going to open a new chapter on Indian luxury train travel. The band – five fellows playing trumpet and assorted other instruments  followed us from the coach that had deposited us outside Bangalore train station to a special waiting room.

As we walked in, a smiling girl smeared red dye on my forehead and put a garland. And then, in the distance, across the platforms, I saw her: dressed in imperial purple, sitting perfectly still while all around her chaos swarmed. She was the Golden Chariot, a 19-carriage luxury train that was to be my home for the next week as it traversed the southern state of Karnataka from Bangalore to Goa. The Golden Chariot is Karnataka’s answer to Indian luxury train travel and has 11 passenger coaches, each named after the different dynasties that ruled in this region. It departs from cosmopolitan Bengaluru  and the luxurious Golden Chariot train travels through Mysore, Srirangapatna, the scenic Nagarhole National Park, the historical sites around Belur, the world heritage sites near Hampi and Pattadakal, and the golden beaches of Goa.

The beauty of the Golden Chariot is that every little detail is arranged – so its passengers can enjoy their Indian luxury train travel without any of the hassles. It may be a train, but it offers a bird’s eye view of Karnataka – gliding above the state, swooping down at certain points before soaring ever onwards. It had been a dizzying adventure of gods and nature, palaces and temples; an incredible odyssey into India’s past that will stay with me long into the future.
